HLC - AB: Half Log Cabin Quilting Class

Materials:

Fabric:
Depending on the size of the block that you want to make, you can use either 2" inch strips or 2.5" strips.  When choosing fabrics, look for prints with overall designs with constant prints.  Small prints work best rather than large prints with gaps in design.  You want to have a clear definition between the light and dark fabrics or the quilt blocks will not provide the expected results.

1.  2" strips will require 8 light fat quarters and 8 dark fat quarters.  This makes 6 inch blocks and you will need 64 blocks to make the quilt.

2.  2.5" strips will require 6 light fat quarters and 6 dark fat quarters. or 2 jelly rolls (42 strips each).  You will need a total of 64 strips from the two jelly rolls.  This makes an 8 inch block and you will need 36 blocks to make the quilt.

Tools:

1.  Sewing Machine (in good working order).
2.  Cutting mat at least 18 inches long.
3.  Rotary Cutter
4.  Acrylic ruler at least 4 x 14 or 6 x 12 inches (best).

1.  Roller Presser or similar tool to press the tops of seams (like finger pressing or better)
2.  Small iron if desired - We do have two irons to share at the Shoppe
3.  Stripology ruler for cutting strips if using 2 inch strips
4.  6.5 Inch square ruler for squaring up your 6 inch blocks.  You will need to use your ruler or Stripology ruler to do the 8 inch blocks

Class Prep:

1.  Iron any fat quarters that have large or prominent creases to make cutting easier.
2.  Wash all fabric before ironing if you want to wash the fabric ahead of time.
3.  If using fat quarters, cut your strips.  You will be able to get 8 2 inch strips from one fat quarter or 6 2.5 inch strips from one fat quarter.
4.  Separate strips into dark and light fabrics to be ready to cut them into the log during class.
5.  If desired, you may follow the directions on 8 of your book.  Follow the directions for cutting dark fabrics and light fabrics.  Please note that         the last cut from the dark fabrics is longer than the others.
